Sudden damage, often more than one insurer

Impact damage is sudden and can be serious. A car or van hitting a wall, a lorry clipping a building or a falling object can damage the structure as well as what you can see.

These claims often involve more than one insurer. Your own policy may pay for the repairs, while the driver's motor insurer may ultimately be responsible, and it isn't always clear who should pay or how quickly.

Our loss assessors take care of it. We make sure the property is made safe, the full extent of the damage is assessed, and the claim is pursued with the right insurer, so you get the repairs you need without being caught in the middle.

FAQs

Common questions

See all FAQs
A vehicle hit my house. Whose insurance pays?

Often you can claim on your own buildings insurance, and your insurer may then recover the cost from the driver's motor insurer. Alternatively, the claim can be made directly against the driver's insurer. We help you choose the best route and deal with both.

What if the driver didn't stop?

Report it to the police straight away and get a crime reference number. Many buildings policies still cover impact damage where the driver can't be traced, so it's worth claiming.

Is it safe to stay in the property?

If the impact has damaged the structure, it may not be. Don't take risks: get it checked, and we'll arrange emergency works and alternative accommodation where your policy covers it.

Is a fallen tree impact or storm damage?

It depends on why it fell. A tree brought down in a storm is often claimed as storm damage, while one that fell for another reason may come under impact. The difference can affect your cover, so we make sure it's claimed correctly.
